Wolves Premier League Preview

Wolverhampton Wanderers enter the 2019/2020 Premier League season with high expectations both internally and externally. Fosun (the conglomerate that has ownership of Wolves) are expecting their investment to continue to produce improvements on and off the pitch with the club becoming a global powerhouse in the world of football. The fans similarly have high expectations and will be hoping for an even greater season than last with Wolves competing both domestically and on the European stage.

Fosun, since taking ownership of Wolves in 2016 has focused heavily on re-branding the club and ensuring it has a global appeal. This was on show during the clubs pre-season tour to China where the clubs new mega store and fashion line was presented. This shows Fosun’s ambition for Wolves as a club and they will be expecting the £80 million they have spent on players during the transfer window to help propel Wolves further into Europe’s elite.

Wolves have reinforced in several areas. Before the transfer window opened Wolves announced permanent deals for both Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendonker, two key players who Wolves fans were delighted to see stay at the club. Patrick Cutrone was bought in from AC Milan as another option for the Wolves attack. The young Italian striker who has already been capped by Italy will provide rotation for Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota as well as allowing the team to play with two out and out strikers should the need arise. Jesus Vallejo the young Spanish centre back on loan from Real Madrid will provide competition for Ryan Bennett at the back and provide much-needed cover across the back three. Wolves also announced the signings of Pedro Neto and Bruno Jordao from Lazio who despite being relatively unknown in England will provide squad depth for the team which will be vital considering the extra European games this season.

Wolves are one of a number of teams that would consider themselves to be the best of rest, this being the best team outside of the top 6. Wolves alongside Everton, Leicester, West Ham and Watford have all spent large sums during the summer transfer window to help ensure they remain in this position, as well as reducing the gap between themselves and the top 6. With the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United potentially having problems there may not be a better chance than this season for one of these teams to break into the top 6.

For Wolves, this season provides the opportunity to prove they deserve to be playing European football. With the backing of Fosun by way of new transfers and a passionate fan base, Wolves have the perfect setup to have a good season. There are question marks from the outside as to whether the squad has enough depth to handle the extra matches. However, Wolves fans are optimistic and believe in the ownership, the management and the players and will be expecting an impressive showing starting against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
